Choosing secondhand patio furniture for another season outside
Look closely at frames, cushions, access, and maintenance before choosing the next piece for your outdoor space.

A comfortable outdoor seat can make a small balcony as inviting as a large garden. Buying secondhand gives you a way to find that piece, but outdoor wear deserves a close look: sunlight, moisture and repeated storage can affect more than the finish.
Seasonal listings may offer opportunities, depending on your area. Treat the condition and total cost as the decision, rather than assuming the end of summer guarantees a bargain.
Measure the outdoor room
Record the space the furniture can occupy while leaving clear access to doors and walkways. Include room to pull out chairs and the dimensions of your storage area, if the furniture will spend part of the year inside.
Check the route to a balcony or backyard as well. Gates, stairs and narrow side passages can be more restrictive than the final space. A set contains several pieces, so confirm exactly what is included and measure each one.
Inspect frames and connections
Look beneath tables and chairs, around welds and joints, and at the points where legs meet the seat or tabletop. Surface discoloration and structural damage are different issues. Cracking, significant corrosion, wobble or repaired load-bearing connections deserve careful assessment.
Identify the material rather than relying on a color or finish. Painted metal, timber and synthetic wicker age differently and need different care. Follow the maker's guidance for cleaning and maintenance; avoid assuming one treatment suits every surface.
Budget for cushions separately
Check cushion dimensions, fastenings and whether covers can be removed according to their care instructions. Look for persistent odor, staining, seam failure and degraded filling. A replacement cover may not solve a problem inside the cushion.
Price suitable replacements before buying. An inexpensive frame can become an expensive project if it needs a complete custom cushion set. Choose comfort and condition over an unverified claim about the original fabric brand.
Give cooking and heating equipment its own decision
A patio chair and a gas fire table require different checks. For any cooker or heater, identify the exact model, review the manufacturer's instructions and check .
